About Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the world's largest cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Our vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured, from the most common types to those that affect just a few people.

Cancer poses a huge and growing challenge, with the number of people around the world who receive a diagnosis each year expected to rise dramatically, from 15 million in 2015 to 24 million in 2035. In the 1970s, less than a quarter of people with cancer survived. But over the last 40 years, survival has doubled today half will survive. Our ambition is to accelerate progress and, by 2034, see three-quarters of people surviving the disease for 10 years or more.

We're pioneering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, as well as finding ways to optimise treatment. The infrastructure we have created for scientists enables world-class research, and we engage and empower patients, policymakers and the public to make sure advances in research have a positive impact. None of our life-saving work would be possible without the strength of our fundraising and our outstanding people our supporters, volunteers, patients and staff.

To make the biggest difference for people with cancer and their loved ones, we focus our research in these four areas:

PREVENT- Reduce people's risk of developing cancer
DIAGNOSE- Diagnose more cancers earlier
TREAT- Develop new cancer treatments
OPTIMISE- Make treatments more effective for each patient

Clinical trials are one of the most important ways people living with cancer take part in our work. They're a critical step in the process of making new treatments and tests available. Each year, tens of thousands of people join trials we support. We're hugely grateful to each and every one of these patients for taking part and helping drive forward research at such a difficult time in their lives. Currently only 1 in 5 cancer patients take part in research. We want every cancer patient in the UK to be given this opportunity. We're working with the NHS and other partners to help make this a reality.

Our pioneering work extends into a number of related areas. We help millions of people get the information and support they need to help them understand and cope with the disease. We run awareness activity to help people reduce the risk of developing cancer and know how to spot cancer early. We campaign to keep cancer at the top of the agenda. This includes work on policy issues like access to appropriate treatments, cancer screening, support for research in the UK and tobacco control. And we work with other leading organisations to fight cancer across the UK and beyond.

Some of our recent achievements include:

• A Cancer Research UK funded early-stage trial suggests that a drug used to treat ovarian cancer could also help people with certain forms of brain tumour.
• Our new calculations confirm lifestyle changes could prevent four in 10 cancer cases.
• A study we co-funded finds chemotherapy drug Capecitabine has fewer side effects but is just as effective at treating breast cancer.
• Thanks to our campaigning, the Government announced plans for an extra 5,000 NHS diagnostic staff.

How your donations are spent

Every single pound donated helps accelerate our success. We receive no Government funding for our research. For every 1 donated, 80p is available to spend on beating cancer. The remaining 20p goes towards raising vital funds for the future.
